Should We Keep Silent about Our Practice
From various sources

There are many reasons we should keep silent about our practice in Wicca, both about our religion and our practice of magic. If you go public you could face several problems like your significant other leaving you, if you rent you could find yourself tossed out of your home or unable to rent the home you wish to have. People have lost their jobs because they were found out to be Wiccan, Pagan or Witch as well as loosing custody of their children and even been victims of harassment and violence.

There are somethings that are generally kept a secret even when you are public about being Wiccan, Pagan or Witch. Your magical name is many times something just between you and your Deity and/or your coven and/or close magical friends. The identities of others you know to be of the magical community is another. You have no right to Out someone you know is Wiccan, Pagan or Witch. It is their choice to take that step to be out of the broom closet as we say. It is also not appropriate to talk to others about what occurs in a circle or who was in attendance. Also, you may not want to tell your boss exactly why you want a certain day off so you can attend a Sabbat or Esbat celebration.

So how does a Wiccan, Pagan or Witch live their daily lives? In a way, those of us in the magical community have a double life. Most of it is simply tending to the mundane things that everyone deals with like paying our bills and working a job as well as the daily chores everyone else does, but the Wiccan, Pagan and Witch do have those moments when we attend to our personal spiritual selves. Like doing a Full Moon ritual or a spell as well as Sabbat rituals and other magical and Witchy things and these we tend to do out of sight of our non-magical friends and family; all though it is becoming easier for Wiccans, Pagans and Witches to practice out in the open in many areas of the USA, Canada, UK and Europe. Still witchcraft of any kind is still feared and outlawed in many other countries, so you may not wish to be open about your practice.

In the USA, there has been some official acceptance of Wicca, Paganism and Witchcraft. The Armed Forces officially accepts and allows the practice of Wicca/Paganism/Witchcraft by their men and women, even to the point of allowing circles to be performed on the military base and even setting aside a designated place for their practice. The IRS now grants tax-exemption to Wiccan or Pagan temples. Most prisons now allow for Wiccan or Pagan clergy to minister to their Wiccan or Pagan prisoners. Media in many areas tends to be more accepting of Wiccans or Pagans with favorable coverage. There have also been some invitations by churches to have a Wiccan or Pagan speaker. And now there has been some invitations by some government councils for a Wiccan or Pagan clergy to do an invocation before meetings start. Still there is confusion, doubt, fear and ridicule aimed at the Wiccans, Pagans and Witches.

Most of the misinformation is coming from televangelists and other evangelical clergy. Most of whom are saying we are of the devil and plan to take over and wipe out Christianity and are doing human and/or animal sacrifices. Sacrificing living beings is generally not a part of Wicca or most Pagan practices. As a matter of fact Wicca strives to do no harm so sacrificing a living being, whether human or animal, would be against all that is believed by Wiccans.

On a positive note, being public with your faith and practice can result in respect and curiosity from your family and friends, as well as meeting new people who share your general beliefs as well as spiritual growth. You might even have an employer who will give you days off for your holidays such as Sabbats. Some of the factors to be considered when thinking about telling others that you are Wiccan, Pagan or Witch is how well you know those around you, how well you really understand the path you've chosen, the attitude of your community and how comfortable you are talking about your path. Remember that it may become apparent to others that you are of a different faith by your daily actions and habits. This is a very personal subject so don't let others influence you into telling those around you if you just don't feel like it is something you should do. It just isn't necessary to make these revelations to everyone. If you live in a country where there is religious freedom, that freedom also means you have the right to keep it to yourself. No one needs to know what you are doing on October 31st or any other date.

Some of the worse reasons for going public with your choice of religion is for shock value. Also, don't go public just to get attention, as well as a way to make money or to expand your ego. These are poor reasons for choosing Wicca or Paganism as your spiritual and religious path. Wicca or Paganism is supposed to be a personal spiritual choice and should be something you choose as a way to make you a better person and also should be about your worship of your chosen Deity, not about your worship of yourself.

Magical Secrecy

What is the essence of magic as well as reasons for performing it and its definitions? It is the projection and manipulation of energies to make needed or wanted changes. It is also used to heal ourselves and others and the planet. Also, to cause needed changes in ourselves. There are numerous reasons to do magic.

Most of the magic done by Wiccan, Pagan and Witches practice is what is called folk magic. So, what is folk magic? It is the use of or the making of charms and herbal mixtures, and of stones and other natural energy-filled objects to create needed change. It is not always done within a circle.

Why do some say we are to keep silent about our magical workings? It is believed that the magic needs to cook to make it work. In other words, it needs time to manifest itself. It is believed that to speak of your spell disperses the energies you've put into them. Also, others may consciously or unconsciously send energies to counter your working or spell. In other-words, someone may in some way work to stop the spell. Also there are those that say once you have released the magic to the Deities to manifest, by speaking or even thinking about it is showing that you don’t trust the Deities to handle it. However, there are those that say that speaking about a spell can add to the energies you put in it to begin with. While others say that speaking or thinking about a spell has no effect on it at all. Personally, I feel that if you've done the spell correctly and put your intent into it, then it will work. I generally see no reason to speak of it again.

Then there are those that believe that the act of secrecy would reduce the spells effectiveness. By believing in the need for secrecy to make a magical working effective, you are putting limits on what magic can do and thus adding doubt to the mix. It is true that any doubt about the effectiveness of the spell will take away from its effectiveness. It's not good to put limits on your workings. Having one limit can lead to other limitations; like always having to work with the Moon phases, or that you must always use certain ingredients and tools in a spell. But the truth is a spell will work as long as you've concentrated on it with a strong intention and truly believe in it. What you use to do the spell helps the spell along but it isn't the main thing you need, focused intention is.

Another reason given for secrecy when doing magic is that historically it was dangerous to speak of doing spells. This isn't always true for the most part today in the USA, UK and Europe. But it can be very dangerous in certain other countries. So be aware of how witches are treated in your area.

So, do you need to always talk about your magical workings? No. Just don't keep it as a secret in a limiting way. Discuss it with those close to you if you wish or if there is a real reason for doing so, but if it's personal or you just don't want to, then don't; though most of your discussions should have been done before you actually did the spell working. But for the most part, it isn’t anyone’s business what or when you do spell workings. Also remember that someone might just try to work against your spell. Just as it isn’t necessary to keep a spell working a secret, it also isn’t necessary to talk about it. Secrecy in magic has no place in a solitaries’ practice when it is putting limits on your magic. Remember that belief in your spell working is just as important as intent. And also remember that you shouldn’t be bragging about doing a spell just to impress or scare people. That will certainly take away from the energies you put into it. You shouldn’t be trying to impress others with your abilities to do spell work. You will find that others will actually think less of you when you do that. In the end it is up to you whether or not you speak about doing a spell working. Just be sure there is a real reason to do so.

I follow if they don't ask, I don't tell. My path, my rituals are for what I want to do, it's not for those who have no understanding. If someone wants to discuss things then I'm open for that said discussions. I sense ppl first to see if they are seeking information due to they want to learn or just being nosey. I don't like to waste my time lol.
